Mayor Doug Knebel highlighted significant downtown improvement projects during his report at Monday’s Vandalia City Council meeting, pointing to fresh signs of momentum in the city’s ongoing revitalization efforts.
Knebel told council members he recently attended a ribbon cutting ceremony marking the relocation of Bulk Plant Resale to its new downtown Vandalia location. The event doubled as a showcase for another key component of the building’s transformation, with attendees given a tour of the newly finished upstairs loft apartments.
The mayor also referenced an additional downtown project currently in the works, signaling that the Bulk Plant Resale opening is just one piece of a broader push to bring new life to the city’s core.
The developments echo conversations that began years ago. Just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March of 2020, the City of Vandalia heard a presentation from Downtown Strategies, a consulting group that laid out several options for reinvigorating the downtown district. Among the ideas discussed at that time was the revitalization of downtown apartment space the very concept now taking shape above Bulk Plant Resale.
With loft living returning to the heart of Vandalia and new businesses moving into long-standing buildings, city officials appear to be seeing the early returns on a vision years in the making.
