Friday afternoon found Lawrence County, Ohio, in a dramatic near miss when a small single-engine plane crashed into the back yard of a home and exploded into flames. The accident occurred at about 2:15 p.m. on County Road 1A at the Lawrence-Scioto county line, shocking residents of the small rural community.
Emergency crews hurried to the scene to put out the fire and salvage the wreckage. The only occupant of the aircraft was the pilot, who survived without any reported life-threatening injuries. It was a Mooney M20J that was destroyed in the impact.
By Saturday morning, April 18, the investigation was under federal authorities’ control. Authorities are also trying to figure out precisely what happened to the plane that made it plummet down into southeast Ohio. The space is still closed as crews look at the location and assess flight information.
The residents reported hearing the plane falling and the loud crash before it struck their community, which they termed as one of the strangest to strike the community in recent years. The locals are thankful that the result was not much more serious, although the investigation is ongoing. This recent small plane accident in Ohio has again raised questions about the safety of small planes flying along rural routes in the state.
