Republican and Democrat lawmakers in Springfield are taking opposite approaches to housing affordability, with Republicans pushing tax relief and Democrats backing increased state spending.
State Sen. Erica Harriss introduced Senate Bill 3959 in February, which would give first-time homebuyers a $500 credit against their state income tax liability. The bill is part of a broader package from Harris aimed at reducing the overall property tax burden on Illinois residents.
Republican legislators have been calling for major tax reform in the wake of Gov. JB Pritzker’s proposed state budget, which takes a different direction, addressing housing affordability through expanded state spending while raising various tax rates.
The two sides haven’t found common ground. Democratic leaders in the legislature have backed the governor’s approach, while Republicans argue that tax relief is the more direct path to making homeownership accessible.
