CENTERVILLE — The Butler boys cross country team won the Greater Western Ohio Conference American Division championship on Saturday at Centerville High School.
The Aviators were seventh overall with 159 points, but that easily out-distanced Tippecanoe, their nearest competitor in the division, who had 190 points.
Long Lin was the top finisher for the Aviators with a sixth place overall time of 16:22.9. Kyle Wertz was 22nd (17:16.5), followed by Gabe Warren (27th, 17:26.2) Adam Gunckel (41st, 17:42.0), Caleb Vieth (63rd, 18:34.7), and Matt Mescher (88th, 19:43.3).
“Our boys team has a great distance running culture,” said head coach Andy White. “All these guys love to run and love to train. The older guys show the younger guys how to be successful. Our seniors won their 3rd conference championship. We beat a good Tipp city team that has been a top 10 ranked Division II team. Our boys executed our race plan to perfection. They deserved this victory. They have been a great group to coach.”
The Butler girls were 13th overall and fifth in the American Division.
Elizabeth Kilgore was the top Butler finisher at 49th place in a time of 21:27.3. She was followed by Abbie Schoenherr (59th, 21:58.8), Natalie Mauer (90th, 25:39.2), Michelle Valdivia (97th, 26:33.5), and Gracie Armitage (101st, 27:29.2).
“Congratulations to Elizabeth and Abbie who made Second Team All-Conference,” said White. “They have been working hard and they were rewarded with all conference honors.”
The Aviators will compete on Saturday, Oct. 21 in the Division I District Cross Country Meet at Cedarville University. The girls will run at 1 p.m. with the boys following at 1:45 p.m.
