Aviator spikers record first win

VANDALIA – The Butler volleyball team has endured a rocky start to the season that has included injuries and a coaching turnover. On Saturday, in their first match under interim coach Caitlin Shumaker, the Lady Aviators rallied to sweep Urbana in three sets 25-19, 25-11, and 25-17 to earn their first win of the season.

Shumaker, who was appointed the interim coach on Friday following the resignation of coach Mel Dumenlang, liked what she saw.

“After a slow start to the season, the girls rallied together and played really well,” said Shumaker. “It was a great team effort and something that I believe we can build on to continue to improve the rest of the season.”

Grace Swarts lead the Aviators with 29 assists, Willow Knight led in kills with eight, and Grace Cope recorded three blocks for team-high. Knight also had three aces to lead the Aviators and Victoria Theobald had high digs.

Butler returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Tippecanoe in a match that ended too late for this edition. They will host Fairborn on Thursday, Sept. 7 at 6:45 followed by Stebbins on Tuesday, Sept. 12 and Tippecanoe on Wednesday, Sept. 13. All of those matches begin at 6:45 p.m.
