DAYTON – Butler junior Daiton Sharp outpaced not just 13 other athletes, but Mother Nature, while advancing to the OHSAA State Track and Field Meet in Columbus this week.
Sharp was third in the long jump at 22 feet, 4 inches at the Dayton Regional on Wednesday to advance to State. The top four finishers in each event advanced to the State meet.
Just after Sharp’s jump that would eventually hold up to advance, the meet was suspended due to lighting and it rained much of the night after that.
Sharp was the only District qualifier to advance to State.
Long-fa Lin, who qualified in both the 3200 meter and 1600 meter runs, chose not to run in the shorter race. He placed sixth in the 3200 meter run in a time of 9:44.86, just over nine seconds short of a qualifying time. Gabe Warren was 15th in 10:23.83.
Butler’s 4×800 meter relay team was the only other placer as Kyle Wertz, Adam Gunkel, Warren, and Lin placed eighth in 8:26.73.
The Lady Aviators placed 14th in the 4×800 meter relay as Victoria Theobald, Olivia Schoenherr, Maddie Mitchell, and Abbie Schoenherr ran in 10:21.90. Tyree Fletcher was 10th in the long jump with a leap of 16-06.
Brooklyn Warren placed 13th in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 16.76 seconds and Olivia Schoenherr was 13th in the 800 meter run in 2;26.61. Abbie Schoenherr placed 16th in the 1600 meter run in a time of 5:58.14, Sydney Baker was 16th in the 400 meter dash in 63.15 seconds, and the 4×400 meter relay team of Baker, Alyssa Burley, A. Schoenherr, and O. Schoenherr was 14th in 4:10.90.
Sharp will compete in the State Track and Field meet on Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State University. Competition will begin at noon.
