VANDALIA — Brannon King and Hayley Munn are the winners of the Blake LaForce Memorial scholarships for 2015. Two scholarships are awarded annually to a male and female student athlete by the Blake LaForce #41 Memorial Fund.
“These two people have persevered and over-achieved in the face of extreme adversity and are leaders by example amongst their peers,” said Mark LaForce. “Brannon will go to West Virginia Tech and will wrestle, and Hayley will go to the University of Cincinnati to study design. Brannon was a good wrestler and played football at Butler and Hayley was a leading cheerleader. Brannon is autistic and Hayley fights Chron’s disease, so they are challenged with a physical handicap, but they minimized it, overcame it, and over-achieved and lead every day.”
King acknowledged LaForce in a thank you letter and called Blake a “hero.”
“This is a great honor and I promise to honor Blake’s memory by always trying my best and never giving up,” wrote King. “I would also like to thank you for all you do for the students at Butler High School. Blake will never be forgotten and is a true hero in our community.”
Munn also expressed gratitude.
“I was thrilled to learn that I was a recipient of the Blake LaForce #41 Memorial Scholarship,” said Munn. “I am writing to express my deep gratitude for your generous, financial support toward my higher education. I will rely on the qualities of Blake, such as compassion, tenacity, mental and physical toughness and courage to ensure that I am worthy of this honor as I balance education and my health challenges.”
One of the fundraisers for the Memorial Fund is the 41 Hope 5K run and walk.
The second annual 41 HOPE 5K Run/Walk will be held on Saturday, August 29, the morning after the ‘Play for a Cure’ Butler home football, and is a key component of the Blake LaForce #41 Memorial Fund.
Registration is open at 41HOPE5K.com. Those registered before Wednesday, August 19 will get a discount and a t-shirt. Those who cannot run or walk may order a shirt only by August 19.
