VANDALIA – On Wednesday the Vandalia Butler Lady Aviators hosted Piqua for their last home game of the season. Butler came into the game off a close win over Troy on Saturday. Piqua also won their last game, as they defeated Greenville on Saturday.
The game carried much importance and intensity in the last game for Butler’s three starting seniors. Shelby Moses, Riley Clark, and Abby Grooms were congratulated before the game. Butler opened the game fast, and never looked back. They grabbed a big lead and never let go throughout the contest. The Aviators held a 21 point lead at the half, only to extend later. Butler finally polished off Piqua by a final score of 54 to 19.
The Aviators opened the game strong, with something to prove for the exiting seniors. Butler outscored Piqua 19-4 in the first quarter. The Aviators played excellent on both ends of the floor, wearing down the Indians with effective scoring and physical defense. Butler was led in the opening quarter by Olivia Schoenherr who added six points. With this fast start, Butler would hold a 15 point lead as they headed into the second quarter.
Butler continued their success in the second quarter, as they continued to dominate Piqua both offensively and defensively. The Aviators stretched their lead to 21 in the second, as they outscored the Indians nine to three. Five different Aviators added points in the second, including Senior Riley Clark who added a free throw. Butler would lead Piqua at halftime by a score of 28-7.
The Aviators stepped up on the defense end in the third quarter, as they held the Indians to only one point. While playing excellent defense, Butler added 18 points in the quarter. Senior Shelby Moses had a big quarter for the Aviators, adding two baskets and two free throws. After a great third quarter, the Aviators put themselves in great position to grab a Senior Night win. Butler led with only one quarter remaining by a score of 46-8.
The success finalized in the final quarter for the Lady Aviators. Butler gave the underclassmen an opportunity to gain experience. The Aviators added eight points in the final quarter. Despite Piqua outscoring Butler in the fourth quarter, the Lady Aviators still cruised to an overwhelming victory. Butler was led in the final quarter by Senior Abby Grooms who added a free throw for the Aviators. The Lady Aviators cruised to a 35 point victory, 54-19.
Leading scorers for the Aviators were Shelby Moses with 21, followed by Olivia Schoenherr with 12 and Abby Grooms with nine. Senior Riley Clark also added two points for the Aviators on Senior Night.
