VANDALIA — On Wednesday the Vandalia Butler Lady Aviators hosted Greenville for a GWOC North divisional showdown. Butler came into the game off of a loss to Sidney, part of a two game losing streak. Greenville had also lost their previous contest when they were defeated by Troy on Saturday.
Butler outplayed the Wave on both ends of the floor, and flourished in this contest. Eventually the Aviators would polish off Greenville 46-18. This 28 point win moved the Aviators to 4-3 in the division, and to 11-7 overall.
Butler opened the game solid, consistently finding scoring opportunities, while locking down the Wave on the defensive end. The Aviators out scored Greenville 12-6, which gave them a quick six point lead early on. Junior Brittney Petrosky added three points for the Aviators in the quarter.
The Aviators continued their success in the second, wearing down Greenville in both ends of the floor. Butler held Greenville to only three points in the second, while they added nine of their own. This stretched the Aviator lead to 12 as they headed to halftime. Leading the way for the Aviators in the second quarter was Senior Abby grooms, who added 4 points. Butler led at the half 21-9.
Butler carried their momentum into the second half. The Aviators added 15 points in the third quarter. Butler didn’t allow a basket until late in the third, and limited to only 2 points in the whole quarter. Junior Olivia Schoenherr had a huge quarter for the Aviators, adding eight points. Butler would lead heading into the last by a score of 36-11.
The Aviators cruised through the last quarter, taking the starting lineup out and gaining experience for the underclassmen. Senior Shelby Moses led the way in the final quarter with a three point field goal. Four different Aviators added points in the final quarter. Butler polished off Greenville 46-18.
Leading scorers for the Aviators were Olivia Schoenherr with 16, followed by Shelby Moses with 10 and Abby Grooms with 9.
The Aviators will be back in action on Saturday when they host Troy. Tip time for that game will be 11:30 for the Junior Varsity, with Varsity to follow at 1.
The Junior Varsity also defeated Greenville 30-29.
