TROY – On Friday the Butler Aviators Basketball team traveled to Troy for a Greater Western Ohio Conference North divisional contest with the Trojans. Butler came into the game off of a victory over Miamisburg and looked to get two wins in a row for the first time this season.
The game started fast, with neither team grabbing an early lead. Just before half, Troy would catch fire and lead by nine at the intermission. Butler rallied in the second half and tied the game late in the fourth quarter, but Troy found a way to defeat Butler 45-42.
The loss dropped the Aviators to 2-6 overall and 0-2 in the GWOC North.
The game opened quickly for both teams with Butler taking a slim lead early in the quarter, but Troy battled back for a 10-10 tie at the end of the first period. Leading the way for the Aviators was senior James Clark who added four points for the Aviators.
Troy’s defense clamped down in the second quarter as they held the Aviators to just six points. The Trojans began to find their rhythm offensively which led to Butler being outscored 15-6 in the second quarter leading to a 25-16 halftime deficit. Senior Brian Jenkins scored four of Butler’s six points in the quarter.
The Aviators began to chip away at the Trojan lead in the third quarter. Butler scored 15 points in the period, outscoring Troy by six points. Senior Zach Ledbetter brought the Aviators closer, adding six points from the floor and three from the foul line. Butler trailed by three heading into the last quarter, 34-31.
The Aviators tied the game early in the fourth period. Both teams were trading basket for basket, neither team pulling away for the victory. Butler took a one point lead with just over a minute to play. After a timeout, Troy scored with under a minute remaining. After a miss by the Aviators, they were forced to foul and send Troy to the foul line. The Trojans hit both, and Butler couldn’t recover.
Leading scorers for the Aviators were Zach Ledbetter with 19 followed by Brian Jenkins with 11 and Torin Fletcher with seven.
The Aviators will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Beavercreek. Tip time for that game will be 6 p.m. for JV and varsity will follow at 7:30.
