VANDALIA —The Sixth Grade Wee Aviators claimed a Western Ohio Junior Football Conference (WOJFC) Super Bowl Championship after 20-14 double overtime win over Springfield Blue Saturday night at Butler High School.
“It was a good victory,” said Coach Michael Paige, who said it was an “unbelievable feeling” for the kids and the coaches to win at home.
Springfield trailed in the game last year, before claiming the victory.
“To play Springfield again, the team that beat us last year and actually come out on top this year, was exactly what the kids wanted,” said Paige. “Springfield won the Super Bowl the last three years in a row. To knock them off our last year, our sixth grade year, was huge for this team. We fought all year to get to that point.”
The locals trailed Springfield 14-0 at halftime. Coach Paige said the first half was pretty rough as the team made some mistakes as the players were real nervous.
“It took us a while to settle down,” said Paige. “I think in the second half, we settled down a lot.”
In the middle of the third quarter, Sixth Grade Purple cut the lead to 14-8. Luke Mitchell connected with Gage Harestad on a TD pass. He then connected on the extra points pass to Cody Joynes.
Purple tied the game in the fourth quarter on a 25-yard touchdown around the right hand side.
In the first overtime, Purple fumbled on the first play. However, the defense held Springfield.
In the second overtime, Springfield was thwarted by the Purple defense as Springfield faced a fourth-and-20 situation and was unable to score.
“Our defense played lights out,” said Paige.
On Purple’s possession, after a running play, Mitchell threw a pass to Chandler Perdue who broke several tackles enroute to the endzone and the victory.
