TROY — They came into the sectional tournament as the top seed, and Butler’s Vynessa Evanson and Leigh Harden lived up to their billing. The Lady Aviators defeated Troy’s Maggie Hennessy and Ashley Bruns 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 last week to win the Troy Sectional Doubles Tournament.
Evanson, a junior, and Harden, a senior, advanced to the District Tournament to be held Thursday and Saturday at the Linder Farm ATP in Mason.
The ladies had a bye in the first round and then swept Springfield’s Anjali Mistry and Charlotte Connolly 6-1, 6-0 in the second round. In the quarterfinal round, Butler defeated Dancer/Le of Stebbins 6-1, 6-2 and then defeated Troy’s Zoey Scancarello and Sierra VerStraten in the semifinals 6-0, 6-2.
That set up a finals match against Hennessy and Bruns of Troy.
Butler’s other doubles team, Allie Bohanon and Maggie Lane, advanced to the quarterfinals witha 6-0, 6-2 win over Zilyasova/Dang of Stebbins and a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Meleehah Umerani and Lena Syed of Springfield. They fell to Hennessy and Bruns of Troy 6-0, 6-0.
In singles, Ashley Hess, a Butler freshman, defeated Meredith Pruitt of Troy 7-5, 6-2 and then defeated Acadia Wulf of Fairborn 6-3, 6-1. She then fell to eventual champion Akilah Parker of Northmont 6-0, 6-0.
Junior Madison Peyton defeated Aurora Miller of Tecumseh 6-0, 6-0 but was eliminated by Northmont’s Kennedy Harden 6-2, 6-4.
Allison Baker, a sophomore, fell in her first match to Marissa Anderson of Northmont 6-0, 6-1.
