SPRINGFIELD – As the regular season winds down, the Butler boys and girls cross country teams are hitting their stride. On Saturday, they traveled to Buck Creek State Park in Clark County for the Buck Creek Invitational. The Butler boys finished third out of 22 teams while the Lady Aviators placed seventh out of 20 teams.
Kyle Wertz placed fifth overall with a time of 16:47 while Long fa Lin (9th, 17:00) and Caleb Colon (10th, 17:02) also finished in the top ten overall. Gabe Warren placed 53rd in a time of 18:30, while Sean Luttrell (64th, 18:49), Mitchell Heeter (99th, 19:30) and Nick Luttrell (100th, 19:31) rounded out the Aviator runners.
“Our top three ran great today,” said Butler head coach Andy White. “They all ran personal best times. They worked off of each other really well. We improved as a team today. We have been training really well. It was a matter of time before we had a breakthrough and today was that day.”
For the Lady Aviators, Emma Bryant led the pack with by finishing second overall in a time 18:46. Olivia Schoenherr was 23rd in a time 20:53, Abbie Shchoenherr 42nd in 21:32, and Sarah Hickle 62nd in 22:24. Shelby Moses (93rd, 23:20), Nicole Weiss (113th, 23:52), and Michelle Valdivia (121st, 24:14) rounded out the Lady Aviator runners.
“The girls ran their best race of the season,” said White. “We had improvements from all of our varsity runners. We have been practicing better and their race results showed it. We are an improving team. Abbie Schoenherr and Sarah Hickle had huge races for us today.”
The Aviators will complete the regular season on Wednesday as they travel to Tipp City for the Tipp 2-mile. Butler will then compete in the Greater Western Ohio Conference championships on October 17 at Centerville High School.
