Aviators remain unbeaten in league play

XENIA — The Butler Aviator tennis team remained unbeaten in league play this week after wins over West Carrollton, Beavercreek, and Xenia. The Aviators are now 8-1 overall after dropping a 3-2 match versus Springboro and 5-0 in Greater Western Ohio Conference American North.

On Thursday, the Aviators traveled to Xenia and won a 5-0 match.

At first singles Xia Lin defeated Alexis McClelland 6-1, 6-0, Rachel Burton defeated Jaedan Thomas 6-0, 6-1 at second singles, and Erin Dean defeated Autumn McCray 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, Ashely Hess and Hanna Scarpelli swept Ally Baker and Anna Carlson 6-0, 6-0 and at second singles Tori Studebaker and Jo Velasco defeated Leah Pagett and Allison Shaw 6-0, 6-0.

Butler 3, Beavercreek 2

BEAVERCREEK — The Aviators traveled to Beavercreek on Wednesday and escaped with a narrow 3-2 victory.

Lin defeated Dhira Venkatramani 6-4, 6-1 at first singles and Dean defeated Kensie Lutz 6-0, 6-2 at third singes. Burton lost to Beavercreek’s Julia Bays 6-0, 6-0.

Beavercreek took the first singles match as Katie-Ann Woehl and Taylor Schaaf defeated Hess and Scarpelli 6-4, 6-2. Butler won the match in the second singles as Studebaker and Velasco lost the first set but rebounded to win the final two over Chloe Stanforth and Courtney Knight by a score of 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Butler 5, West Carrollton 0

VANDALIA — Butler breezed to victory over the visiting Pirates of West Carrollton on Tuesday, Aug. 28. Lin won at first singles 6-0, 6-0 over Kaci Ha, Dean defeated Munira Aripova at second singles 6-0, 6-0, and Butler claimed third singles by default.

Hess and Scarpelli downed Taylor MacDonald and Jillian Wagner 6-0, 6-0 at first singles while Studebaker and Burton defeated Julia King and Iyana Perkins 6-0, 6-0 at second singles.

Springboro 3, Butler 2

VANDALIA — The Aviators suffered their first defeat of the season in a tight match with the visiting Springboro Panthers on Monday.

Lin won a touch match at first singles over Katelyn Mazurek 7-6 (5), 6-2, while Boro’s Alyssa McGarvey won second singles over Burton 6-0, 6-0. Springboro also took third singles with Dean falling to Kiley Preston 7-6 (6), 6-0.

The teams split the doubles matches with Hess and Scarpelli winning over Springboro’s Savannah Woodruff and Emily Rives 6-2, 6-1 at first doubles while the Panthers’ Claire Sullivan and Hellen Tiffin defeated Studebaker and Velasco 6-2, 6-1 at second doubles.

Butler hosts Loveland in the second round of the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association team tournament on Friday and then will travel to Alter on Tuesday.
