VANDALIA — The Butler Lady Aviators soccer team began their season with a showdown versus Chaminade Julienne and came into the game looking to prove themselves and defeat the Lady Eagles for the first time since 2011. During that span, the two teams had tied twice with a CJ win sandwiched in between.
The Lady Aviators came out strong and played physical and determined soccer and pulled away for a 5-3 victory.
The first half opened quickly with the Aviators striking first right out of the gate. Brittney Petrosky gave the Aviators a 1-0 lead on a goal from the right corner of the field just over three minutes into the game. The Aviators held that lead for over 20 minutes, played excellent defense and limited the Eagles offensively.
After 24 minutes into the game, CJ would strike back with a goal. Just before the half, the Aviators jumped back on top with a goal by Keonni Rakestraw. Butler headed into the half up 2-1.
The second half began slow, with neither team getting many shots on goal and both playing excellent defense.
CJ tied the game up once again 21 minutes into the second half, but the Eagles wouldn’t be tied long. A penalty gave the Lady Aviators a free kick which Petrosky scored to give the Aviators a 3-2 lead.
Ten minutes later, the Eagles scored again, and continued the back and forth battle between the two teams and, with the score tied 3-3, another tie looked probable.
Petrosky had other plans, however, as she scored two more goals in the last four minutes, leaving her with four goals in a 5-3 victory. Butler would eventually polish off the Eagles and start the season one and zero.
The next game for the Lady Aviators will be on Wednesday August 26 as they travel to Centerville. The game will bel played at the Centerville High School football stadium, NOT the soccer stadium, which is undergoing renovation.
JV will begin at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity teams 20 minutes later.
