VANDALIA — High school sports isn’t always about winning and losing, and Butler girls golf coach Carolyn Thiel said that is key for her inexperienced team in the tough game of golf.
“A lot of my girls are just figuring out the game of golf,” said Thiel. “I try to teach them how to fight through the frustrations and still have fun, even in those frustrations.”
The Lady Aviators return four players from a year ago – seniors Katie Moses and Lauren Masonbrink, junior Hope Nishwitz, and sophomore Kaitlyn Jackson. First-time competitive golfers Hailee Perry and Haley Hampton round out the roster.
Pooja Patel, who is pictured in the team photo, is no longer with the team.
The Aviators have faced a tough schedule to start the season, and placed 11th at the Greater Western Ohio Conference Pre-season tournament on Aug. 7.
Upcoming matches feature Greenville, Troy, Wayne, Piqua, the Fairmont Invitational, the Hadley Invitational, and C-J. The GWOC Post-season tournament is Sept. 24.
Thiel said all the GWOC North rivals are very good.
“We are really just focused on the girls and their improvement,” said Thiel. “When things aren’t going well, I tell them to take a deep breath, keep playing, and keep rolling. The girls have been able to get some good scores. They are having fun.”
