MASON — This past Saturday the Vandalia-Butler Aviators competed at the Mason Invitational, both girls and boys earning an impressive amount of points at their first meet of the season. Of 37 teams, the girls placed 9th and the boys placed 4th, finishing the meet in 6th place overall.
Girls- On the girls team, the medley relay of Rachel Shively, Sydney Baker, Abbey Burton and Jillian Mcdowell took 7th at finals with a time of 2:06.99. Shively, Baker, Burton, and Mcdowell, also swam the 200 medley together, taking 8th place with a time of 1:52:98. Senior Sydney Baker and junior Abbey Burton both made finals in their individual events, swimming a total of eight events throughout the course of the day.
Baker placed 6th overall in the 100 breastroke with a time of 1:15.67 and also took 14th in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:10.13. Burton swam the 100 individual medley taking 6th place with a time of 1:07.10 and 100 freestyle with a time of 59.21 taking 9th place.
Boys- On the boys team the medley relay of Brendan Shanahan, Dalton James, Adam Gunckel, and Colin Wolfe took 7th place in finals with a time of 1:52.67. The 200 freestyle relay of Matt Brunksy, Brendan Shanahan, Adam Gunckel, and Colin Wolfe out-touched St. Xavier relay team resulting in an impressive 1st place finish with a time of 1:32.43 and a new meet record. Individual qualifier Colin Wolfe also took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.21 and finishing behind him was freshman Matt Brunksy in 10th place with a time of 24.04.
Brunksy and Wolfe also both swam the 100 freestyle, Wolfe taking 4th, swimming a time of 52.12 and Brunksy taking 12th with a time of 54.50. In the 500 freestyle, Adam Gunckel placed 8th place with a time of 5:31.71, later taking 5th place in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.36. Senior Brendan Shanahan took 8th in the 100 individual medley with a time of 1:00.55 and 13th in 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.70. Also swimming 100 backstroke was freshman Riley Brady taking 16th over all with a time of 1:07.52. Sophomore Khalil Ruiz and junior Jacob Staley both qualified for finals in their individual events both taking 14th place overall. Staley finished his 100 breastroke with a time of 1:11.50 and Ruiz finished his 100 butterfly with a time of 1:03.99.
