Pair arrested for hotel break-in

VANDALIA — Two people were arrested last week for breaking into a shed at the Hawthorne Suites on Poe Avenue.

Michael E. Lewis, 46, and Connie L. Thompson, 43, both of Dayton, are incarcerated in the Montgomery County Jail and facing a felony breaking and entering charge. Both have bond set at $10,000.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of August 8 when a guest at the hotel heard Thompson and Lewis talking outside his room. His room was next to a storage shed that police say the suspects broke into and stole a bed frame.

Witnesses indicate they took the bed frame, pushed it over a fence, and then loaded it into a vehicle in an adjacent parking lot.

After the theft, the two, who were staying at the hotel, went to eat breakfast from the hotel’s breakfast buffet before returning to their room.

Vandalia police were called who found Lewis in his room with another male. That man indicated to police that Lewis was who they sought and he was taken into custody. A short time later, police saw Thompson outside the hotel walking toward her room and detained her.

Thompson told police that the maintenance worker at the hotel had given her permission to take the bed frame as well as a lawnmower that was in the shed.

After further questioning, both were arrested and taken to the county jail.
