VANDALIA — VFW Post 9582 invited a Vandalia graduate to be the guest speaker at the Memorial Day Service held at Vandalia Sports Complex. Major Travis L. Hord, U.S. Marine Corps, spoke to those in attendance about the last question in the Star Spangled Banner: “O say does that star – spangled banner yet wave o’re the land of the home and the brave” Major Hord says emphatically “YES, It Does!” Each and every soldier thinks of this each morning and before going to sleep at night that serving in the United States Military is a proud duty of a free and brave United States of America.
Major Hord is currently RS Commanding Officer. Major Hord has deployed to Diyala Province, Iraq, 2007; Anbar Province, Iraq 2008; Umm Qasr, Iraq, 2011; 15th Maine Expeditionary Unit,2012-2013; 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, 2013-2015. The Major’s Personal Awards/Special Recognitions include a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal 3rd Award, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Action Ribbon.
Major Hord resides in Annapolis, Md. with his wife Jill and 3 children. His parents Ennis and Marlene Hord from Vandalia now reside in Tipp City. Major Hord expressed pride in returning to Vandalia as a guest speaker having been raised here.
Wright Patterson AFB Honor Guard presented formal honor for the Memorial Service. In this capacity the Honor Guard presents the American Flag during the ceremony honoring the fallen service men and women who gave their lives for the United States. Honor Guard: MSgt. “Looking out on the audience I see generations of military families,” stated Commander Bob Hinshaw of Post 9582. “Support from family and friends is important to every service man and woman who serves in the military.”
On June 24, all Veterans and their families are invited to attend the Veterans Air Show Picnic featuring the Air Force Thunderbirds . The picnic will be held at the Post located at 4170 Old Springfield Road. VFW Post 9582 hosts dinners and activities throughout the year which the public is welcome to.
