VANDALIA — So you think that you know about the story of “Hansel and Gretel.” The one read and enjoyed first as children and maybe again as parents or grandparents. But unless you were there, you probably don’t know the version that brought uproarious laughter at Vandalia Senior Center.
It followed the Senior Center’s Potluck Dinner on November 4. The Center’s Readers Theatre cast presented a “revised” telling of the old fairy tale in a 30 minute spoof. Surprisingly, the play author, Steven Stack, had added a new character called Sadie. Sadie became the star putting a slightly different twist on the comic presentation. It was topped off with an unexpected ending.
Costumed Readers Theatre actors carried scripts and acted out the scenes without bothering to memorize lines. Two other short humorous skits were also presented, “Waiting on Trains” and “Them.” The audience of members and guests who attended had a fun “dinner-theater-like” evening according to a source who was present.
