Changes coming at Vandalia Recreation Center

VANDALIA — Change is afoot at the Vandalia Recreation Center.

Daily admission rates are moving from an age basis to simply resident or non-resident. The new daily admission rates, effective November 1, are:

Resident $5

Non-Resident $8

4 and Under Free

“This policy adheres to the City’s Fair Share Policy, which recognizes that Vandalia residents are already supporting the center through their tax dollars, and thus should receive a lower rate than the general public,” said Recreation Superintendent Jeff Kreill. “Vandalia residents will need to bring proof of residency to receive the lower rate, at least for their first visit under the new policy.”

Proof if residency can be a state-issued ID or drivers license with a Vandalia address or a current utility bill with a Vandalia address and a picture ID.

“Once residency has been established, the center will issue the patron a Vandalia Resident photo ID, which must be shown on subsequent visits to receive the lower rate,” said Kreill. “The ID card will be issued free of charge, and is valid for two years from the date of issue.”

Another change is coming in the form of open gym time. The Recreation Center will now have two kinds of open gym – Public and Limited. These changes will also occur on November 1.

During Limited Open Gym, only VRC Members, VRC Member Guests, and Vandalia residents will be permitted to access the gym. Other center amenities, such as the fitness center, the climbing wall, drop-in fitness classes and the aquatic center will be open for general public use even during limited open gym times. The limited open gym will only impact the gymnasium.

“The center believes that by moving to limited and public open gym times, VRC members and residents will have more opportunities to enjoy the gym and should help to create a more family-friendly atmosphere,” said Kreill.

The hours and types of open gym will be as follows:

POG = Public Open Gym (anybody can utilize the gym – current set-up)

Monday – Friday: 6 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Saturday: 7 – 10 a.m.

Sunday: No POG

Holidays (half day)

LOG = Limited Open Gym

Members & guests

Residents (Guests of Residents NOT permitted)

Monday-Friday: 2 p.m. – Close

Saturday: 10 a.m. – Close

Sunday: Open – Close of Vandalia photo
