VANDALIA – The news headlines of the past few weeks have sparked a national conversation regarding the relationship between police officers and the communities they are sworn to protect and serve.
Vandalians have reached out to offer their perspective, much of which has been overwhelmingly positive.
To show support for Vandalia’s police, the organizers of Vandalia’s National Night Out are sponsoring an essay contest for kids in grades K-8. The essay should on what police mean to the writer individually or why police are important to a community. Essays should be 100 words or less, typed, and submitted to Darrell Wacker, Editor of the Vandalia Drummer News, by Monday, July 25 via email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The essays will be judged in two age groups, grades K-4 and 5-8. Judging will be done by a panel and the top three writers in each age group will be invited to read their essay at the National Night Out festivities on August 2 and the Vandalia Sports Complex. Prizes will be awarded to each of the three finalists.
