VANDALIA – Tara Landis, an art teacher at Butler High School and Morton Middle School, has been named the January Staff Member of the Month for the Vandalia-Butler City Schools.
Landis was nominated by Director of Pupil Services Rob O’Leary.
“Tara gives up her plan period every Tuesday to provide art class for our MD students at Butler High School,” said O’Leary. “I think that is awesome!”
How long have you been teaching?
This is my 17th year, all in the Vandalia-Butler district.
What do you teach?
8th grade and high school art
Why did you become a teacher?
I always like working with kids at camps in the summer. I also had so many great teachers growing up who inspired me.
Did you have a specific teacher who made an impact on you?
I had so many great teachers while growing up here in Vandalia. Steve Mahoney had the greatest impact on me as a student and a teacher. I was lucky enough to have him as a teacher and to work with him during my first 14 years of teaching.
What is your proudest teaching accomplishment?
Seeing so many of our students move on to “bigger and better” things. We have animators, architects, interior designers, graphic designers, etc., who have gone through our program. As a teacher, that is so rewarding.
How would you describe your teaching philosophy?
As a teacher I want to encourage creativity and provide students with basic skills needed to be a responsible member of our community. Respect differences, expect the best every day and treat everyone how I would want to be treated.
How do you think your students would describe you?
I actually asked my students. Here are the most popular: funny, honest, goofy, energetic, caring and creative
What do you hope your students take from your classroom?
Treat everyone with respect. Do your best. You never know what you can do unless you try.
