VANDALIA — The Vandalia City Council welcomed its newest member on Monday night as the council held its annual organizational meeting. Richard Herbst was sworn into his first term on the council while Mayor Arlene Setzer and Council members Bob Ahlers and Dave Gerhard were sworn into new four-year terms.
David Lewis was also sworn in as Vice Mayor.
Herbst was optimistic as he joined the council.
“I’m excited and looking forward to working with the council and city staff,” he said. “I’m very impressed with how well the City of Vandalia is run. That is a testament to the Mayor, City Council, and the staff. I hope to find my niche and help make Vandalia one of the most desirable places that people want to live.”
“It is exciting to have a new member,” said Setzer, “but we will certainly miss Councilman Dave Brusman. We are looking forward to the new year.”
She said that the council began visiting all the city’s departments last year and will continue to visit them to assess the city’s needs and operations. Those reviews included the city’s budgeting process, Parks and Recreation Department, the Finance Department, and others.
“With the new way we are doing budgeting, we are also finding new ways to make purchases while also saving funds,” said Setzer.
The council also made appointments to various boards and committees. Those appointments are:
- Parks and Recreation Advisory Board – Dave Lewis
- Cultural Arts Committee – Candice Farst
- Public Art in Vandalia – Candice Farst
- Vandalia Development Corporation – Dave Gerhard and Mike Blakesly
The council also passed a motion to continue holding regular council meetings on the first and third Mondays of each month beginning at 7 p.m. except for the summer sessions. Those meetings are held on the third Monday of June, July, and August at 6 p.m. Other meetings may be called by the council with advance notification of the public.
During its regular meeting on Monday, appointments were made to the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) and the Transportation Coordinating Committee. Mayor Setzer was appointed as the city’s representative to MVRPC with Assistant City Manager Greg Shackelford serving as the alternate. Public Service Director Rob Cron was appointed to serve on the MVRPC Technical Advisory Committee.
Setzer and Herbst were appointed as the city’s representatives to the First Suburbs Consortium.
