VANDALIA — The Vandalia Food Pantry has announced the results of the Fall Food Drive which took place Oct. 10-11.
Out of 5,774 grocery bags distributed, 1,141 bags were collected that contained 14,305 food items. Additionally, monetary donations of $3,175 were collected.
Organizer Julie Staats said that the drive was the most successful in five years in terms of donations collected.
“Thank you so very much for your support of this event,” Staats said to members of the Vandalia-Butler community. “Your efforts and donations will provide enough for the Food Pantry to supply four months of requested food in our community.”
On Sunday, Oct. 11, volunteers spent 235 man-hours sorting and counting the food. Volunteers also distributed the grocery bags on Saturday.
“This is also the first year we were able to cover nearly all single family homes in Vandalia and Butler Township since 2011,” said Staats. “Thanks go to the selfless volunteers from many churches and organizations who gave up their time on a Saturday morning and afternoon to distribute bags.”
Staats requested that the community mark their calendars for next year’s Fall Food Drive on Oct. 15-16, 2016.
