The Annual Bazaar is about here, Saturday, October 3. Be sure to remind friends and family to come from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Remember we will take your donations for trash and treasure until 11 a.m. on Oct. 2. Just put them under the coat rack.
Vandalia Senior Club seeks officers
It also is the time of year that we need to think of officers for the Vandalia Senior Club. The positions do not take a lot of time but keeps our club organized. If you or someone you know would like to help, please let Donna Shirley, Mary Miller, Freda Schmidt, Joyce Mason, Jean Lutz, or Toni know. Positions: chairman, co-chairman, secretary, treasurer, and catered dinner/entertainment chairman. We need your help to keep our club together.
You Are Invited to Friendship Village
The next Lunch & Learn will be AT Friendship Village. The bus can hold 28 riders. Another 22 people can drive themselves to lunch at Friendship Village. You will get on the bus at 11:15 a.m. and return about 2 p.m. There will be lunch, some fun, and a tour. The deadline to sign up is October 5 or 50 people signed up, whichever comes first.
Sinclair Seminar — Moonshine & NASCAR: The Connection
Moonshine, white lightning, mountain dew, hooch, and white whiskey…all terms you’ve probably heard. But what you may not know is that it was an important source of income across Appalachian communities. You may also not know that there’s a connection between moonshine and today’s NASCAR enterprise. Come to hear about the history of moonshine, and even though it was illegal early on, find out where you can legally buy it today. This seminar will be presented by Kathy Hayes on Tuesday, October 6, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Please register for this free seminar by calling 512-2372 or 512-5184.
Friday, October 9, at 1 p.m. with Kelly Lundqvist from Crossroads Rehab. Melissa McCarthy plays a desk bound CIA analyst guiding her partner played by Jude Law on a mission to find a suitcase nuke. He accidentally kills the man he is meeting before finding out where the suitcase is. Then Jude Law gets shot by the man’s daughter as Melissa McCarthy watches online. She volunteers to become a field agent to try to find the nuke.
Vandalia Fall Food Drive for the Vandalia Food Pantry
The food drive will be October 10 and 11. You can bring food in early to the barrel in the hallway near the front door. It will be temporarily moved during the bazaar.
Sinclair Registration for Spring Quarter
The spring quarter begins on January 11 for all classes except the history class which begins on February 22. All classes will conclude at the end of April. To make registration easier, Anne Holaday will be here on Thursday, October 15, from noon to 2 p.m. and again on Monday, November 2, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 to 2 p.m.
New: Brunch & Learn
Dr. Debbie McFarland, a chiropractor and a holistic endocrinologist, will speak on the topic, “I Really Hate Diabetes.” She will talk about testing and natural solutions to supplement the body’s chemistry. The brunch will be on Thursday, October 15, from 10 to 11:30 a.m.
Friday, October 16 at 1 p.m. with Chris Leydig from Gensis Troy Healthcare The movie is called “Age of Adaline.” A young woman, born at the turn of the 20th century, is rendered ageless after an accident. After many solitary years, she meets a man who complicates the eternal life she has settled into.
Volunteer Appreciation Lunch
It’s no trick, your help has been a real treat! Let’s celebrate all the volunteer work that has happened this year with a great lunch. If you are an officer of the Senior Club, a Van Tran driver, helped with congregate meals, worked in the office, worked at the bazaar, decorated the center, helped with membership, set up for potluck dinners, or helped in other ways, sign up by October 16. The lunch will be on Friday, October 23, at 12:30 p.m. This lunch is sponsored by Medigold.
LOVE Your Senior Center and Renew Your Membership by Valentine’s Day on February 14!
Before some of you leave for the winter and before the holidays are upon us, let’s take care of membership renewal early. To encourage you to take care of this early, if you renew by October 30, you will be entered into a sweepstakes to win one of ten prizes including a membership to the Vandalia Rec Center, punch cards for the Rec Center, and gift cards to grocery stores, restaurants, and more. You can write your check to the City of Vandalia and mail it to the address on the back of the newsletter. For Vandalia residents, it is $15 or $25 for couples. Outside Vandalia, the cost is $20 or $35 for couples. Also include your address and phone number to make sure your current ones are on your membership form on file. You can also come into the center to take care of this.
Estate Planning for Funerals and Burials
A seminar will be presented by Michael J. Millonig, Attorney At Law, on Tuesday, October 20 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Michael J. Millonig practices law at 7929 Washington Woods Dr. in the Washington Township and Centerville Area. He will cover the following topics: estate planning for funerals and burials, options for various types of funeral arrangements, emphasis on how to save money, new Ohio law governing who has the right to make funeral decisions for the deceased, a legal document to ensure your instructions are followed and appoints a person under Ohio law to make all funeral and burial arrangements. This is a consumer oriented seminar. The information presented will be different from what you would hear from someone in the funeral home industry. Please sign up so he knows how many handouts to bring. This is open to the public.
Make a Sundae
Amanda from Home State Healthcare in Troy will be coming on Thursday, October 22, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. She will be bringing different kinds of ice cream and a variety of syrups and toppings to let you create an ice cream sundae.

On Friday, October 30, at noon, Douglas Deutsch from Creative Solutions will have a Lunch & Learn. His topic will be “Senior Citizens Combat Identity Theft.” The deadline to sign up is Thursday, October 22.
Meet with the Superintendent
Bradley Neavin, the superintendent of the Vandalia-Butler City Schools will be here on Tuesday, October 27, from 1:45 to
2:45 p.m. He will present a thirty minute presentation on the state of the schools. Then he will take questions. Snacks will be provided.
Fire Prevention Month Games
Whether you attended the fire classes or not with Kim Hanahan, come join her to play fire games during Fire Prevention Month. She will be playing home safety bingo, trivia, and jeopardy. This will be on Thursday, October 29, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Flu Shots by Hocks
Did you get your flu shot yet? Hocks is offering another chance to get your flu shot on Thursday, October 29, from 11 a.m. to noon. Please sign up on the bulletin board and then pick up paperwork in the office to fill out ahead of time and return it so Hocks can bill your insurance company.
Annual Medicare Check-Up Day
Representatives from the (OSHIIP) Ohio Senior Health Insurance Information Program will be at the Vandalia Senior Center for their annual Medicare Check-up Day event on Friday, October 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. One-on-one counseling with be available to compare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans for 2016, as well as screen beneficiaries for financial assistance programs, such as extra help with prescription costs and for Part B premium savings. Note: Please bring a list of your current prescription drugs to compare plans for 2016.
Two Invitations From Vandalia-Butler City Schools
Football Tailgate and Game: You are invited a tailgate prior to the football game on Friday, October 30. Park near the grass area by the tennis courts where there will be a white tent with tables and chairs. Please arrive by 5:45 p.m. The meal is from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. The menu will be hot dogs and buns, potato salad, chips, desserts, tea and water. If you want to stay for the game against Trotwood, you will receive a ticket. Seniors will be sitting right in front of the reserved seating section. Be sure to sign up by Monday, October 26 so the list of names can be sent to the high school in time to order the food.
