CLAYTON — Northmont’s new gymnasium dubbed the ‘Thunderdome’ was utilized for the first time Monday evening when the girls basketball teams hosted Vandalia-Butler.

The Northmont Junior Varsity posted a 33-25 victory over Butler to record the first victory in the first-ever game played in the spacious new arena. Unfortunately the varsity team didn’t fare as well.

The Lady Bolts could not stop Butler’s 6-foot, 1-inch center Abby Grooms who sliced inside repeatedly to score key baskets whenever the Lady Aviators needed a big basket to finish with 16 points. Britany Petrosky added 14 points, going six-for-six from the foul line in the fourth quarter to propel Butler to a 50-41 victory.

With the win Butler improved to 2-2 overall while Northmont fell to 1-1.

Northmont limited Grooms to five points in the first half and Petrosky to eight. Grooms made her mark in the second half with 11 points. Petrosky helped the Lady Aviators keep the game out of reach by converting all six of her free throws in the fourth quarter. Butler Coach Molly Bardonaro credited both players for their role in the victory.

“We’ve been telling Grooms that if we want to win games she is going to have to step-up and do the things she did tonight. She has to lead us offensively and get rebounds, and she did that tonight,” Bardonaro said. “Petrosky is not afraid of anybody or anything. She will do what she needs to do to help the team out. She steps up big defensively. She is not afraid to step in front of anybody to stop them from getting in the paint and she came up with some big plays.”

Aside from senior guard Cory Mangen the Lady Bolts floundered. Mangen tallied 16 points hitting four 3-pointers, two in the first quarter. No other Northmont player managed to score in double figures. Other than Mangen’s two first quarter treys, the Lady Bolts couldn’t find the basket. Butler led 11-6 after the first quarter and 23-18 at the half.

The game got off to an unfavorable start for Northmont with the team being penalized for a substitution violation for not entering a player’s name properly in the scorebook resulting in a technical foul. Petrosky converted one of the technical free throws and Shelby Moses followed up by burying a 3-pointer to give Butler an early 4-0 lead.

Despite their inability to score consistently, the Lady Bolts remained within striking distance trailing 32-26 after three quarters of play. Cory Mangen hit another trey and a 2-pointer and Alexia Payne also hit a 3-pointer in the third quarter as the pair accounted for all of Northmont’s scoring in a period dominated by defense. Butler managed to generate only nine points in the third stanza.

Butler pulled away in the fourth. Northmont closed the gap to six points with 5:19 remaining. From that point on Butler converted 12 of 16 free throws to secure the win. Butler went 25 for 38 from the foul line while Northmont shot a dismal 5 for 14 at the stripe.

“Butler really stepped up. They played hard and knocked down their free throws,” said Northmont Coach Bethany Kincer. “They were 25 of 38 from the free throw line. It’s hard to beat a team when they make 25 free throws. They out-played us and out-worked us and made a good solid effort. They came out and knocked us out. We just couldn’t get anything going on offense. We really struggled offensively tonight. It seemed like we would drive and shoot and nothing would fall. We could just never get anything going.”

Butler plays at Centerville on Thursday and then hosts Fairborn Saturday at 1 p.m. Northmont hosts West Carrollton Friday at 6 p.m. and travels to Trotwood-Madison on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game.
