VANDALIA – After an 0-5 start, the Butler volleyball team, along with new coach Caitlin Shumaker, have been surging by winning three of four matches going into last nights match with Tippecanoe.
A historical volleyball power, the Lady Red Devils came into the match with just one loss on the season after surviving a tough match versus Butler a week prior.
On Wednesday, the Aviators tried to turn the tables by forcing the match into a fifth set after splitting the first four in close games.
After tying the score at 9-9 in the fifth set, Tipp took a time out and then outscored the Aviators 6-2 to claim a 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 24-26, 15-11 win.
Butler dropped to 3-7 on the season and 2-5 in the GWOC North while Tipp improved to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in league play.
“Tonight was truly a great fight,” said Shumaker. “We had our whole team rallying together to go neck-and-neck with Tipp. It was an intense, hard match, and I loved watching our girls play their hearts out. I wish we could have walked away with the win tonight, but I’m really proud of how well we played.”
Victoria Theobald led the Aviators with 50 digs, Grace Swarts had 28 assists, and Grace Cope had three aces.
“Victoria did a great job garnering 50 digs against a great hitting team,” said Shumaker.
Aviators sweep Stebbins
On Tuesday, the Lady Avaitors defeated Stebbins in three sets 25-17, 25-14, 25-13.
Swarts led with 18 assists while Cope had four blocks and six kills for a .385 percentage. Willow Knight had eight digs and eight kills for a .460 percentage.
“I’m super pleased with our play tonight,” Shumaker said. “The team played with high intensity and worked hard to intentionally apply techniques we have been practicing this week. We’ve won three out of the last four matches, so it’s great to have this momentum going into our match tomorrow versus Tippecanoe.”
