Lady Aviators look to reload

VANDALIA — Entering the 2017 soccer season, the Butler Girl’s soccer team has two things in mind: competing, and staying healthy.

Last season’s successes were were hindered (but not halted) by a plethora of injuries, and the team is determined to overcome these obstacles this year.

“The key to our season is keeping players healthy,” said Coach John Grey. “We already have 3 ACL tears this year, so our freshmen will be seeing a bit of field-time.”

This year’s varsity squad features 3 skilled freshmen- Reese Gingrich, Ella Neely, and Haley Trittschuh.

“Reese Gingrich is a great utility player. She can play up on offense and back on defense- an all around player,” said Grey. “Ella Neely is useful in her speed and scoring.”

The team is seeing the young freshman step up to fill roles of their older injured teammates.

“Haley Trittschuh has played offense her entire soccer career, but when Scherer went down and we needed a defender, she did a really nice job stepping in on defense,” said Grey.

Among the young players are their experienced counterparts who are ready to lead the team this year.

“Bri Fourman and Maddie Mitchell are all around strong and skilled players. They play at a high-level all Spring, and it shows when they come back to the school field. Their skill is clearly a notch above the rest,” said Grey.

Among the team leaders, sophomore Anna Kirchner will look to carry some of the scoring load.

“Anna is small, but she makes up for it in speed and skill,” said Grey.

It’s clear that the combination of youth and experience on the team this season will work in their favor.

“Our rivalry matches this year will be Sidney and Troy,” said Grey. “We lost these games due to injuries.”

The Butler Girl’s soccer team has four seniors- Clara Fiori, Taylor Gingrich, Bri Fourman, and Anna Minier. These seniors are the stand-out leaders on the team, and they are doing their best to help their team prepare for the upcoming season.

The Lady Aviators are looking to evade injury and compete for a great season. You can catch them in action at Home on Friday, August 18th against CJ.
