VANDALIA- Last season the Butler Boys Soccer team finished the season at a .500 record, which was just short of their winning record goal.

Going into the 2017 season, the boys aspire to return to a winning track. Despite losing a bit of experience in 2017’s graduating class, the team has faith in their handful of Varsity returnees and a host of young players.

“We have a freshman Goalkeeper, Eli Galyon who is battling Junior Ethan Kohler for a starting spot,” said Head Coach Steve Doring.

In addition to the younger talent, the Junior class makes up the majority of the squad.

“The Juniors are led by Zane Burgmeier and Chris Mitrousis,” said Doring. “However, Matt Crawford, Parker Jensen, and Riley Weber will look to carry the scoring load this season.”

The defense will be taken on by juniors Noah Taylor and Stuart Royer, but anchored by Drew Sacks and Francisco Jimenez.

“Francisco supplies the emotion for our group, as he is very passionate and a positive influence on everyone, in the locker room and on the field,” said Doring.

Francisco is one of the team’s three captains, who were elected to lead the squad. These captains include seniors Riley Weber, Parker Jensen, and Francisco Jimenez.

“Riley Weber has a high soccer IQ and will be the on-field voice for the coaching staff this year,” said Doring. “Parker Jensen’s work rate is second to none and will provide boundless energy.”

Joining the team this season are two foreign exchange students from Europe.

“Anton Jensen and Benjamin Fechner are looking to add some of their European flair to the squad,” said Doring.

Additionally, the Butler Aviators are readying to face the defending GWOC champions- the Tippecanoe Red Devils.

“Tipp-City will always be well coached and talented,” said Doring. “Sidney and Troy will be difficult road trips as well. The North division teams are all young and eager to win the league, so it should be an open division this year.”

The Boys soccer team had a great summer, and opened the season with a 1-1 tie versus CJ on August 18.
