Aviators roll over Northmont

VANDALIA — The Butler girls tennis team opened the regular season on Tuesday night with a 4-1 win over Northmont while playing their first home match at Helke Park.

“These courts are great and its nice to be able to be out here for home matches,” said head coach Amanda Paul. “I know the girls feel excited that they can have more fans out here being back in town.”

At first singles, Butler’s Allison Baker defeated Lauren Kelsey 6-3, 6-0. The Aviators swept the singles matches with Xia Lin winning over Athaiah Peters 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and Jo Velasco defeating Hailey Jenkins 6-0, 6-1.

“Allison is a senior who has been working hard and really improved to play at the number one spot,” said Paul. “At second singles is Xia Lin who returns from a year ago. She played a 3 1/2 hour long match last night against Beavercreek but she will stay out there as long as it takes. At third singles we have a newer player in Jo Velasco. She has worked every day this summer and earned that spot.”

Butler also won first doubles as Ashley Hess and Hannah Scarpelli defeated Ayana McCain and Ashton Slusher 6-2, 6-4. At second doubles, Butlers Rachel Burton and Erin Dean fell to Northmont’s Whitney White and Serenity Anderson 5-7, 6-0, 6-7(4).

“Ashley and Hannah return from a year ago,” said Paul. “They are two aggressive players who work well together. Rachel and Erin are newer players and are working well and improving.”

The Aviators roster is deep compared to when Paul first started coaching four years ago and only had 13 girls try out.

“We have six returning varsity players and only lost one senior, and with 21 players out the depth has created competition,” said Paul. “At one point we had five girls tied for the last varsity spot so we had challenge match after challenge match. That’s a good problem to have.”
