TROY — The Butler boys and girls track teams started the 2017 season by earning fifth place finishes at the Troy Up and Running Invitational on Saturday.
Both teams scored 45 points as the girls placed fifth out of 12 teams and the boys were fifth out of 13 teams.
Leading the way for the Lady Aviators was Brooklyn Warren who placed first in the 100 meter hurdles in a time of 17.66 seconds. Tyree Fletcher was fourth in the event in a time of 18.77 seconds.
Fletcher was third in the 300 meter hurdles in 52.35 seconds and Alyssa Burley was fifth in 53.81 seconds.
Olivia Schoenherr placed fourth in the 400 meter dash in 1:03.97. She also was fourth in the 3200 meter run in a time of 13:13.92. Abbie Schoenherr was just behind in 13:20.55 to place fifth.
In field events, Fletcher placed fifth in the long jump in 14 feet, 9.25 inches and Hayden Edgel was seventh in the shot put with a throw of 31-02.
“Overall it was a good meet for us,” said Butler girls coach Kyle Schoenherr. “The weather was beautiful. We lost a couple of seniors last year and we have some things to figure out. This meet gave us a chance to look at a couple of our young athletes and see where they are while our veterans shake off the rust and get back to competitive form. The kids did a great job, placed well as a team, and looked good for our first time out.”
Daiton Sharp had a big day for the Aviators as he scored in three events. Sharp won the long jump with a leap of 20-05, was fourth in the 100 meter dash in 11.55 seconds, and eighth in the 200 meter dash in 24.01 seconds.
Long-fa Lin was also an event winner when he took the 3200 meter run in 10:02.28. Kyle Wertz placed third in the race in 10:34.24.
Other scorers for the Aviators were Dalton Shepler who placed fifth in the pole vault at 13-00; Charles Ellington placed sixth in the shot put with a throw of 40-10; Gabe Warren was sixth in the 1600 meter run; Bobby Buckler who was seventh in the 110 meter hurdles in 19.55 seconds; and Paul Sacks who was eighth in the discus with a throw of 115-01.
“I felt very excited for the kids after Saturday,” said Butler boys track coach Butch Wise. “We have a junior shot-putter who is going to be very strong this year. Daiton is just an all-around athlete. I think we should do very well this year.”
The Aviators will travel to Milton-Union on Tuesday for a quad meet and then travel to Tipp City for the Tippecanoe Invitational.
