TROTWOOD – The Butler Aviators continued their late-season surge on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Stebbins 59-40 in the opening round of the OHSAA Dayton Division I Sectional Tournament at Trotwood-Madison High School.
The win lifts the Aviators to 13-10 overall and is the first post-season win in over a decade according to records found on the GWOC website.
Butler advances to face Northmont (18-4) on Wednesday evening at Centerville. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
Miles Joiner led Butler with 26 points and 10 rebounds. He also had three assists and two steals. Michael Kreill had 8, Nathan Stogdill 7, Tyler Burley and Trey Sanders 5 each, and Quentin Glover and Bryant Johnson 4 each.
Johnson had 5 rebounds and 5 blocks and Sanders also pulled down 6 boards.
Butler led the Indians 18-12 after a quarter and then pulled out to a 30-21 lead at half. A 17-7 third quarter eliminated any chance for Stebbins to mount a comeback.
Butler will face a hot Northmont team that has won its last five games by significant margins. The Aviators fell on the road to the Thunderbolts 51-42 on January 3. The Aviators have been surging as well as they have won 9 of their last 12 games.
