Butler boys, girls win sectional championships – head to district on Saturday

TROTWOOD — The Butler boys and girls swimming teams easily won the Division I Trotwood Sectional championships this past weekend. The boys racked up 441 points to outdistance second place Northmont who had 315.5 and the girls team posted 405 points over second place Troy’s 312.

Qualifying for the district meet for the Aviator boys was Josh Crews in the 200 and 500 freestyle, Brendan Shanahan and Jacob Staley in the 50 freestyle, and Colin Wolfe in the 100 freestyle. Butler also qualified in the boys medley relay, 200 free relay, and 400 free relay.

Girls qualifying for district were Abbey Burton in the 50 freestyle, Elaine Dean in the 100 freestyle, Sydney Baker in the 100 breaststroke, and Molly Hetzer in the 100 butterfly. Butler also qualified relay teams in teh 200 free relay, 400 free relay, and 200 medley relay.

District swimming will be held Saturday at Miami University. The boys will compete at 10:45 a.m. and the girls will swim at 5:45 p.m.

Boys individual results:

200 medley relay, Brendan Shanahan, James Dalton, Adam Gunckel, Colin Wolfe paced second in 1:44.89.

In the 200 free, Ryan Conley was seventh in 2:06.72, Cameron Harsch was 10th in 2:13.25.

Marcus Leonardi placed fourth in the 200 IM in 2:34.65, Cameron Tuttle was seventh (2:37.12), and Grant Harsch was ninth (2:51.45).

Staley was second in the 50 free in 23.03 seconds, Shanahan was fourth in 23.26, and Jake Bowers was 12th in 25.83.

In the 100 butterfly, Gunckel was fourth in 57.11 seconds, Khalil Ruiz was fifth in 1:02.93, and Leonardi as seventh in 1:12.11.

Wolfe won the 100 free in 48:07 seconds. Bobby Sebney was ninth in 55:69 and Ryan Conley was 12th in 57.00 seconds.

Crews was the winner of the 500 yard free in a time of 4:55.12. He was followed by Cameron Harsch in third (5:52.75) and Grant Harsch in seventh (6:28.63).

Butler won the 200 free relay with Jacob Staley, Brendan Shanahan, Josh Crews, and Colin Wolfe turning in a time of 1:30.72.

In the 100 backstroke, Ruiz was seventh in 1:04.18, Staley was tenth in 1:05.78, and Joe Jackson was 14th in 1:18.67.

James Dalton was fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.49, Jake Bowers was sixth in 1:09.33, Zebney placed eighth in 1:12.88, and Blaine Payton was 11th in 1:17.64.

Butler won the 400 free relay with Wolfe, Shanahan, Gunckel, and Crews combining for a time of 3:23.49.

Girls individual results:

The Lady Aviators won the 200 medley relay with Elaine Dean, Sydney Baker, Molly Hetzer, and Abbey Burton combining for a time of 1:55.61.

In the 200 free, Ana Valdespino placed fifth in 2:23.57, Gwynne Rohde was sixth in 2:25.12, Erin Dean was eighth in 2:28.45, and Kloe Sharp was 12th in 2:35.66.

Isabel Valdespino was sixth in the 200 IM in 2:47.21, Jillian McDowell was seventh (2:55.98), and Allison Baker was tenth (3:05.51).

Abbey Burton won the 50 freestyle race in 25.65 seconds, Ashley Brady placed ninth in 29.38 seconds, and McDowell placed tenth in 29.46 seconds.

Hetzer was second in the 100 butterfly in a time of 1:03.14, Grace Swarts was ninth in 1:23.96, and Victoria Gunckel was 11th in 1:30.67.

Elaine Dean won the 100 free in 56.17 seconds and Ashley Brady placed tenth in 1:06.09.

In the 500 free, Rachel Shively placed fourth in 6:26.89, Erin Dean was fifth in 6:30.18, and Rohde was seventh in 6:39.26.

Butler won the 200 free relay Sydney Baker, Elaine Dean, Molly Hetzer, and Abbey Burton swam in a time of 1:43.76.

Rachel Shively placed fifth in the 100 backstroke in 1:13.10, Ana Valdespino was seventh in 1:15.08, Swarts was eighth in 1:15.49, and Emily Clayton was 12th in 1:19.35.

Sydney Baker won the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.60. Also scoring were Allison Baker (tenth, 1:27.88), Isabel Valdespino (13th, 1:28.85), and Kloe Sharp (16th, 1:32.67).

Butler also won the 400 relay with Elaine Dean, Sydney Baker, Molley Hetzer, and Abbey Burton swimming in 3:51.84.
