VANDALIA — Offense was at a premium on Saturday as the Aviators hosted the Bellefontaine Chieftains. It was also a special night at the SAC as the 1966-67 Butler Aviator basketball team held a 50th reunion.
Butler held the visiting Chieftains to just two first quarter points and led 9-2 after the first frame. Bellefontaine responded in the second period to cut the lead to three by halftime at 18-15.
The teams ground out just 15 combined points in the third quarter with Bellefontaine edging the Aviators to tie the score at 24-24 heading into the final period. Butler nosed past the Chieftains in the final period to claim a 31-30 victory.
Miles Joiner led the Aviators with 17 points and seven rebounds. Trey Sanders had eight points, five rebounds, an assist and a block while Bryant Johnson rounded out the scoring with six points to go along with five rebounds, three steals, two assists, and a block. Michael Kreill didn’t score but had three assists and a pair of steals.
The win lifted the Aviators to 5-7 overall.
Trotwood-Madison 72, Butler 51
TROTWOOD — The Butler Aviators made a gallant effort at Trotwood Friday night but ultimately the homestanding Rams’ athleticism proved too much as they pulled away for a 72-51 GWOC victory. Butler trailed by just six at the intermission 33-27, but the Rams used a 20-9 fourth quarter to put away the stubborn Aviators.
Michael Kreill led the Aviators with 15 points followed by Miles Joiner with 10, and Nathan Stogdill with seven. Other scorers included Quentin Glover with six, Bryant Johnson with five, Kenny Messenger with three, Trey Sanders and Tyler Burley with two each, and Sutton Skapik with one.
The loss dropped Butler to 4-7 overall and 2-6 overall.
