VANDALIA — On Saturday the Butler boys basketball team hosted Dayton Christian in a non-conference showdown with the Warriors. The Aviators came into the game following a big divisional victory over Piqua on the road.
Butler started the game well, as they grabbed an early lead in the opening quarter. In the second, the Warriors cut into the Aviator lead heading into the half. The second half was all Aviators as they came out firing on all cylinders. Butler would eventually cruise to a 15-point victory, 64-49, to remain unbeaten on the season.
The Aviators started the game strong, playing physical on both ends of the floor. Butler added multiple baskets early in the opening quarter to grab the opening lead. The Aviators played excellent defensive throughout the contest which helped to disrupt the offensive attack from the Warriors. Butler outscored Dayton Christian 19-13 in the opening quarter, giving the Aviators an early lead at the end of the first. Leading the way for the Aviators was Senior Nathan Stogdill, who added a big three-point field goal as well as a free throw to help Butler grab the early lead.
Dayton Christian fought back in the second quarter. The Warriors outscored Butler by three in the second, which pulled them within three points of tying the game. Despite narrowing their lead, Butler fought hard in the second, through their physical defensive and rhythmic offensive strategies. Senior Miles Joiner led the way in the second quarter, as he added three baskets from the floor to keep Butler in the lead. The Aviators would take the lead into the half by a score of 30-27.
After an average performance in the second, the Aviators came out firing on all cylinders in the second half. Dayton Christian had no answer for the Aviator attack on either end of the floor, which allowed the Aviators stretch their lead to double digits. Butler outscored Dayton Christian 20-5 in the third quarter, which stretched the Aviator lead to 18 in the game. Seven different players scored for Butler in the third quarter as they dominated on both ends. Sophomore Michael Kreill added two key baskets to keep the success rolling.
The fourth quarter was much of the same as the Aviators wore out the Warriors on both ends of the floor. Dayton Christian outscored Butler 17-14 in the final quarter, but never got the opportunity to draw closer after the third period. Leading the way for the Aviators was Miles Joiner with 18 points, followed by Tyler Burley with 13 and Bryant Johnson with 10.
The Aviators will be back in action on Friday when they host Troy. JV will begin their contest at 6 pm with varsity to follow at 7:30.
