WEST MILTON — The Butler Cross Country teams opened the 2016 season on Saturday at the Bob Schul Invitational in West Milton.
The Butler boys placed eighth out of 21 teams while placing three runners in the top 24. The Lady Aviators placed 17th out of 26 teams.
Leading the way for the Aviators was Long Fa Lin who was third overall in 16:25. Kyle Wertz ran in 17:23 (21st place), Gabe Warren in 17:35 for 24th place, Matt Mescher (19:29, 112th), and Noah Thompson (19:40, 118th).
“Today’s results were a demonstration of how hard we worked over the summer,” said head coach Andy White. “Long Lin had a great summer of running. He came into the season in tremendous shape. Placing 3rd in this meet was a good result. It should give him confidence as season progresses. Its always nice to start season with a personal best time. We have 3 strong runners up front but the key to our season success will be the development of our runners from 4-7. We need improvement in that area.”
The Lady Aviators were led by Olivia and Abbie Schoenherr. Olivia ran in 22:43 for 68th place and Abbie placed 110th with a time of 23:43. They were followed by Elizabeth Kilgore (142nd, 24:42), Michelle Valdivia (207th, 26:55), Kate Crews (270th, 29:20), and Nicole Weiss (277th, 29:44).
“The girls were lead by the Schoenherr sisters Olivia and abby who provide a solid 1-2 punch,” said White.
After competing in the Lost Creek Invitational in Troy on Tuesday, both teams will return to action on Saturday at the Treaty City Invitational in Greenville.
