VANDALIA – The Vandalia Recreation Center held a youth soccer camp for kids 5-12 year old the week of July 6-10. The camp was led by Butler varsity soccer coach Steve Doring and members of the Butler Aviator soccer team.

“This year we had around 30 campers who participate for four days learning skills, techniques, and participating in small sided games,” said Doring. “The high school staff has done an outstanding job creating fun, engaging, age appropriate activities for the campers.”

Each night the camp ended with a round robin World Cup tournament for bragging rights. Daily prizes, t-shirts, a soccer ball, and camper of the day awards were part of the camp.

“Our goal is to promote the sport we love to the next generation of youngsters,” said Doring.

He said several members of the current Aviator soccer team attended the camp when they were younger.

“All in all I think we get as much out of it as the kids that come to learn the game,” said Doring.
