FAIRBORN – Tyler Burley came on in the seventh with two outs, and the bases loaded to strikeout Tommy Bell and preserve the 2-1 Butler (22-3) win over Fairmont (17-9) in Monday evening action at Wright State.
Senior Carson Schumann (4-1) picked up his fourth win of the season on the mound for Butler, combining with Mitch Gremling and Gavin Kohler to hold the Firebirds to just one run.
Junior Damon Dues ripped an RBI triple to left field in the first inning, scoring Burley for the early 1-0 lead.
The Firebirds battled back an inning later, knotting the game at 1-1 with an Elliot Kurtz single.
The Aviators took the lead for good in the third inning, courtesy of a sac-fly from Burley, scoring sophomore Logan Flatt from third, for the 2-1 lead and ultimate win.
The Aviators now turn their attention to the OHSAA Baseball Tournament, where they will host the winner of Tuesday’s Piqua/Tecumseh match-up on Thursday at 5:00 p.m..
