TROY – Butler (13-0, 5-0) picked up a key GWOC North win Monday afternoon, shutting out the host Troy Trojans 7-0.
The Aviators capitalized in the third inning, turning three walks and an error into five runs on just two hits, to give Butler a 5-0 lead.
Damon Dues got the scoring started with a line drive to centerfield for an RBI single. Two batters later, senior Chandler Craine ripped a shot to rightfield, scoring Dues and junior Tyler Burley.
Next up, Noah Ballard reached on an errant throw by Trojan third-baseman Jordan Peck, scoring Craine and Matt Grossman. From there, the Aviators would cruise to victory.
Senior Mitch Gremling (4-0) was again stellar from the mound, striking out ten in the shutout win. Gremling went the distance for Butler, pitching a complete game, while allowing just five hits.
Behind the plate, Gremling’s counterpart senior catcher Noah Ballard also put in a solid day’s work, doing a nice job of keeping the ball in front of him. A feat that isn’t always easy with a pitcher of Gremling’s caliber on the bump.
