VANDALIA – Butler’s bats came to life Wednesday afternoon, in a 10-3 rout of the visiting Bellefontaine Chieftans.
The Aviators wasted little time in getting the scoring started. Senior Dusty Lewis led off with a double to centerfield, followed by a perfectly executed bunt off the bat of junior Tyler Burley. Two outs later, junior Matt Grossman sent a first pitch fastball to right field, for a two-run double and an early Butler lead.
The Chieftans battled back in the next inning, plating three runs to take a 3-2 lead. The Aviators would strike back in the third inning, scoring four runs and and taking full control of the game.
On the mound for Butler, starter Carson Schumann (1-0) earned the win, allowing just three hits through three innings of work. Junior Zach Crawford came on in relief and worked the final four innings, striking out two and holding Bellefontaine scoreless, while allowing just two hits.
Offensively Butler was paced by Tyler Burley who finished the day 3-for-3 with a triple, double and two RBI. Matt Grossman finished 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while fellow junior Damon Dues went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Senior catcher Noah Ballard also added an RBI in the winning effort.
The Aviators get right back to it Thursday afternoon, traveling to Wright State University to square off against Centerville. Game time is set for 7:00 PM.
Butler 5, Edgewood 0
TRENTON – The Aviators returned to action and their dramatic ways Tuesday afternoon, scoring each of their runs in the seventh inning, enroute to a 5-0 win over host Edgewood.
Freshman pitcher Braedon Norman (1-0) pitched a gem in his varsity debut, throwing a five strikeout no-hitter, lifting Butler to 2-0 on the season.
It was a pitcher’s duel through six innings, as Norman and Cougars’ pitcher Austin Hurley kept the affair scoreless. While Edgewood was unable to crack the code on Norman, the Aviators methodically chipped away at Hurley.
The floodgates opened in the top of the seventh, and it was senior catcher Noah Ballard’s infield single that got things started. Sophomore Logan Flatt followed with a textbook bunt, and senior outfielder Torin Fletcher’s two-run double broke the stalemate.
Juniors Nathan Stogdill and Tyler Burley each singled, and senior Dusty Lewis tripled at the Aviators plated an additional three runs to take a 5-0 lead.
