VANDALIA — The Butler Lady Aviators softball team kicked off their 2016 campaign on Tuesday when they hosted the Urbana Hillclimbers. The Lady Aviators looked to start a successful trend under new head coach Lindsay Shepherd. The Aviators finished 10-17 last season and were 5-5 in the Greater Western Ohio Conference.
The Aviators started the game strong, as they jumped out to a quick two run lead after scoring in the first and second innings. Urbana fought back in the third, as they struck hits together and drove in three runs. After adding four runs in the next two innings, Butler would hold Urbana to only one, and cruised to a 6-4 victory.
In the opening inning, Riley Clark got the Aviators started with a walk and a stolen base. Just two batters later, sophomore Katie Henry would hit a double to left field, scoring Clark from second. Henry was stranded at second base to end the first inning.
In the second inning, Lyndsey Ach hit a deep shot that slipped through a Hillclimbers glove which scored senior Katy Moses.
Urbana would fight back in third as they strung together hits and drove in three runs following an Aviator error.
Butler fired back in the fourth though, as the bats caught fire, and would eliminate the Hillclimber lead and take a lead of their own by two, 5-3. The success continued in the sixth when Sophie Dent hit a triple to deep center field and later scored after an Urbana error. Sophomore Farrah Cole would finish the game on the mound for Butler and surrendered only one run.
The Aviators will be back in action on Thursday, when they host GWOC crossover opponent Centerville. That contest will begin at 5 pm.. at Vandalia Rec Center.
