VANDALIA — After an extensive search and interview process, the Vandalia-Butler City Schools have a new Athletic Director. The Board of Education approved Jordan Shumaker as the district’s new Athletic Director at its work session Monday, March 14. Shumaker comes to Vandalia-Butler after serving as the AD at Graham Local Schools since August 2014.

“In a large pool of highly skilled candidates, Jordan demonstrated he understands all aspects of the role of Athletic Director. His commitment to all students as students first, his understanding of administrative management and his efficacy in the area of community engagement made him the clear choice to serve our student athletes and our community,” Superintendent Brad Neavin said.

Shumaker brings with him an extensive list of coaching and educational experience. Prior to serving as Graham’s AD, he coached at both the high school and the college level. He was the Head Baseball Coach at Northwestern High School in Springfield, taking his team to the District Finals in 2012, the second best finish in school history. He was the Assistant Baseball Coach at Wittenberg University in the 2013-2014 season. He has also coached golf at Northwestern and basketball and baseball at Cedarville University, his alma mater.

Shumaker says his coaching and playing experiences have demonstrated to him the impact athletics can have on the lives of student athletes.

“One of the main reasons I wanted to go into education as a profession was to have a platform to work with student athletes outside of the classroom. I am thankful for the opportunities that my education profession has given me to work with kids in education and sports,” Shumaker said.

Shumaker replaces Roger Bowen, who has been the district AD from 2001-2010 and again from 2014-2016.

“I have the utmost respect for Mr. Bowen and the years of service he has given to the school and the community. I look forward to carrying on the legacy he has created,” Shumaker said.

Shumaker along with his wife Caitlin, three-year-old daughter Aela and one-year-old son Garner are planning to move to the Vandalia-Butler area.

“I am looking forward to working alongside all of the teachers, staff, coaches and community members to create an environment where our student athletes reach their maximum potential.”
