VANDALIA – Julia Helke was already a two-season athlete when she found herself with an opening in her winter schedule. So, four years ago she tried out for the bowling team. Now Helke is co-captain with Savannah Hoke, leading one of the most successful Butler girls’ bowling teams in school history.
“This is probably the deepest team talent-wise we have ever had, as any of the five starters are capable of leading the team on any given day. Both Savannah and Julia are having their best seasons to date, and are both in contention for All-GWOC North honors,” Coach Steve Sachs said.
As a captain, Helke takes her leadership role very seriously.
“Whenever we have a match or tournament, I always try to keep everyone happy and give them a pep talk or try to encourage them,” Helke said.
Helke also would encourage anyone who’s not attended a bowling match to come out and see the Aviators in action.
“Bowling matches are loud and enjoyable. There is a lot of action and some can be very suspenseful,” Helke said.
There’s still a little suspense with Helke’s plans for the future, but one thing for sure, bowling will be a part of any plan.
“I hope I will continue to both have fun and be competitive with friends and family,” Helke said.
