VANDALIA — On Saturday the Vandalia Butler Lady Aviators basketball team hosted Arcanum for an out of conference showdown. The Aviators came into the game riding a three game win streak after defeating Piqua on Wednesday. Arcanum came into the contest with a four game win streak, after beating Mississinawa on Thursday.

The Aviators jumped out to a quick lead before they cooled off in the second quarter. Despite the struggle in the second quarter, the Aviators still had a six point lead at the half at 21-15. Butler stretched its lead in the second half, as the Lady Aviators outscored Arcanum in both quarters of the second half. With their solid second half play, the Aviators cruised to a 19 point victory, 50-31.

The Aviators opened the game fast, and played very productive basketball on both ends of the court. Butler played physical on the defensive end. In addition they passed the ball very well and created great shot opportunities. Butler outscored Arcanum 13-6 in the opening quarter. The Aviators were led by Junior Olivia Schoenherr, who led the quarter with six points. Butler would hold a seven point lead going into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Butler slipped into bad habits, and l let the Trojans control the game. The Aviators were outscored nine to eight in the second quarter. Despite still leading the game, Butler was not happy about their second quarter performance. The Aviators would lead by six points heading into the half, 21 to 15. Senior Riley Clark added three points in the quarter for the Lady Aviators.

Butler got rolling again in the second half, as they played solid basketball and controlled the tempo of the game. Senior Shelby Moses added seven points for the Aviators, including a three point basket and two two point baskets. Butler outscored Arcanum 16-11 in the third quarter, which stretched their lead to 11 with one quarter remaining. The score at the end of three quarters was 37-26.

The Aviators continued their momentum in the final quarter. Butler held Arcanum to only five points in the fourth quarter. Butler added 13 of their own, which stretched their lead to 19 points. Senior Abby Grooms added four points in the final quarter. Butler finally cruised to a double digit victory over Arcanum, by a final score of 50-31.

Leading scorers for the Aviators were Shelby Moses with 17, followed by Riley Clark with 10 and Olivia Schoenherr with 9.

The Junior Varsity also won against Arcanum, with a final score of 38-17.
