COLUMBUS — The Butler boys finished first and the Lady Aviators placed second at the Westerville North Pioneer Team Tournament on Saturday.
The boys were led by Jordan Tompkins who made all tournament team with a 614 (224-178-212) series, Drew Sacks, who just missed the all tournament team by two pins, with a 607 (183-263-161) series and Nick Hughes with a 579 (188-191-200) series. Austen Brush added a pair of 224 games, Paul Sacks a 212 game and Noah Detrick a 190 game. Brandon Warner also contributed to the teams victory, both during the team games and baker games.
The boys led most of the day, but some sub-par shooting in the final four baker games allowed Wayne to pass them up which forced the boys settling for the #2 seed entering match play. The Boys defeated Olentangy Orange in the first round, 2-0, then defeated Licking Valley 2-1 in the semis and faced Pickerington North, who had just defeated Wayne, in the finals. The Boys lost game one, then battled back to win game two.
In game three, consecutive strikes from Paul Sacks, Drew Sacks and Nick Hughes in the 8th, 9th and 10th frames allowed the Aviators to secure the championship.
The girls were led by Savannah Hoke’s 567 (159-193-215) series. Becca Helke and Jordan Steinke added 169 games and Jessica Sacks a 168 game in the qualifying round. The Lady Aviators earned the #4 seed and defeated the host team, Westerville North 2-0 in round one, then defeated Wayne 2-0 before losing to Olentangy Orange 2-0 in the championship match. Lauren Davis, Julie Helke Alex Kapis and Megan Zins all contributed on the day.
