GREENVILLE — On Wednesday the Lady Aviators basketball team traveled to Greenville for a Greater Western Ohio Conference North divisional battle against the Green Wave. This divisional showdown was pivotal heading into the end of the season in keeping the Aviators hopes of a GWOC North title alive.
The game started slow, neither team jumping out to an early lead. The Aviators caught fire before half though, taking a 13 point lead into intermission. Butler rode that momentum into the second half and pulled away defeating Greenville by 30, 60-30. This win moved the Aviators to 7-5 overall and 1-1 in the GWOC North and into fourth place.
The game opened slowly for the Aviators, as they could not get shots to fall on the offensive end while allowing Greenville to find scoring opportunities. Butler was tied with the Wave at the end of the first quarter, scoring only nine points in the opening quarter. Four different Aviators added points in the period, including Senior Riley Clark who added a basket early on in the contest.
The Aviators caught fire in the second quarter while shutting down the Wave defensively. Butler outscored Greenville 19-6 in the period. Leading the way for Butler was Senior Abby Grooms who added six points. The Aviators grabbed a thirteen point in the second quarter, and led 28-15 at the half.
Butler rolled into the second half and outscored the Wave 15-7. Brittney Petrosky led the Aviators in the third quarter with four points on 4-of-4 shooting from the free throw line.
The fourth quarter was much of the same for the Aviators. Butler continued to wear out the Wave, and allowed only eight points. Senior Shelby Moses scored seven points in the quarter as the Aviators cruised to victory.
Leading scorers for the Aviators were Abby Grooms and Brittney Petrosky with 15 each, followed by Shelby Moses with 12 and Brianna Fourman with seven.
The Junior Varsity team was defeated by a final score of 38-32.
The Aviators will be back in action on Saturday as they host the Troy Trojans. Tip time for that contest will be 11:30 for the Junior Varsity, with Varsity to follow at 1.
