BELLEFONTAINE – It was a good day for the Butler varsity bowling teams on Saturday, January 2 at the Bellefontaine Holiday Baker Classic.
The Lady Aviators qualified first, won their first match play match 2-0, then lost to eventual champion Johnathan Alder 2-1 for a third place overall finish finish. The boys qualified third, beat Johnathan Alder 2-1, then beat Springfield in the semifinals 2-0 before falling 2-0 in the finals to Sidney.
The loss to Sidney was slim with the Aviators dropping game one by four pins and the second game by 10 pins.
“We had a great team effort from both squads and great support from our parents”, said Butler coach Steve Sacks. “Baker format is true team bowling, as no individual scores are kept.”
Baker format is where five bowlers bowl games in lineup order in frames 1-5, and then repeat that same order again in frames 6-10. Teams can make as many as three substitutions each game and reset the lineup after each game.
Prior to the team competition, Butler bowler Brandon Warner won the “shootout” event where one member of each team is chosen to throw a shot, all at the same time, with the players that throw strikes continuing on until only one is left. Warner threw three great shots and at the end was the lone one standing.
Competing for the girls team was Lauren Davis, Becca Helke, Julia Helke, Alex Kapis, Jessica Sacks Jordan Steinke and Megan Zins. Competing for the boys team was Austen Brush, Noah Detrick, Nick Hughes, Andrew Kapis, Drew Sacks, Paul Sacks, Jordan Tompkins and Brandon Warner.
