SIDNEY — On Saturday, the Butler Lady Aviators basketball team traveled to Sidney to play the Yellow jackets. The Aviators came into the game riding a four game win streak, and looked to upset Sidney on the road while the Lady Jackets looked to stay perfect on the season.

This Greater Western Ohio Conference North divisional showdown would put the winner in prime position for the divisional title. The Aviators started the game hot and hung with Sidney on both ends of the floor. Sidney would wear down the Aviators in the second half, and eventually ease out to an 11 point win, 65-54.

The Aviators opened the game fast, limiting scoring opportunities for the Jackets, and sticking to their game plan offensively. The Aviators distributed the ball well offensively, with six different players scoring for the Aviators in the opening quarter. Olivia Schoenherr and Brittney Petrosky led the way for the Aviators with each scoring four points. Butler would outscore Sidney in the first quarter 15-13 and hold a slim lead heading into the second quarter.

The Yellow Jackets would hit another gear in the second quarter, outscoring Butler 20-10. Sidney began to play their game, forcing the Aviators out of their slow paced offense. The Aviators began to turn over the ball, and wore down defensively. Heading into halftime, the Aviators Aviators would trail by eight, 33-25. Leading the Aviators in the second quarter was Junior Keonni Rakestraw with six points.

The second half was much of the same for the Aviators, with Sidney outplaying Butler both offensively and defensively. The Yellow Jackets would outscore Butler 32-29 in the final 16 minutes. Sidney continued to wear down the Aviators, and ride their momentum established in the second quarter.

Senior Shelby Moses kept the Aviators within striking distance by knocking down five three pointers in the second half. Butler would trail by as many as 20, but fought back to set the final margin.

This loss moved the Aviators to 0-1 in the GWOC North division and 6-4 overall.

Leading scorers for the Aviators were Shelby Moses with 17, followed by Brittney Petrosky with 15. Olivia Schoenherr and Keonni Rakestraw also added six points each for the Aviators.

Butler will be back in action on January 4 as they host Bellbrook. Tip time will be 6 p.m. for the JV, followed by varsity at 7:30.

The Junior Varsity team also fell to Sidney by a final score of 40 to 36.
