MASON — The Butler men’s and women’s swim teams opened their season at the annual Mason High School Invitational on Saturday. Twenty-three teams competed in the invitational which consisted of prelims in the morning where the top sixteen individuals and top eight relay teams qualified for the evening finals competition.
The Butler men’s team finished the meet in fifth place with 157 points. Winning the boys meet was St. Xavier High School with 491.5 points, followed by Milford (174.5 points), Mason and LaSalle. The Butler women’s team placed fourth overall, scoring 152 points. Mason won the meet with 369 points, followed by St. Ursula (260 points), and Milford High School in third place with197 points.
The Butler men’s 200 Medley Relay Team of Brendan Shanahan, Colin Wolfe, Daveed Adams and Ian Barrett placed second in finals with a time of 1:52.02. The relay team of Ryan Conley, Marcus Leonardi, Bobby Zebney and Sam Fischer finished with a time of 2:13.98. Cameron Harsch swam the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:17.83 followed by teammates Blaine Payton (2:35.47) and James Chrissis (2:38.46). Barrett swam to a seventh place finish in the 100 IM with a time of 1:04.02. Swimming with Barrett in prelims were Conley (1:11.47) and Fischer (1:14.96).
Swimming the 50 freestyle in prelims were Fischer (28.06) and Joe Jackson (30.54). Representing the Butler Aviators in the 100 butterfly was Shanahan, who finished in twelfth place with a time of 1:02.94, and Abrams, who finished in fourteenth place with a time of 1:04.61. Sophomore Colin Wolfe took third place honors in the 100 freestyle, touching the wall in 51.84. Swimming with Wolfe in prelims were Jacob Staley (1:06.58) and Grant Harsch (1:09.04). In the 500 freestyle C. Harsch took tenth place with a time of 6:03.86, with G. Harsch finishing with a time of 6:50.65 and Leonardi finishing with a time of 7:02.39.
The 200 Freestyle Relay Team of Shanahan, Barrett, Conley and Wolfe finished in third place (1:38.91). Shanahan took eight place in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:05.16, joining him in the prelims were Zebney (1:18.21) and Payton (1:28.72). Wolfe swam the 100 breaststroke, coming in fourth with a time of 1:06.96, with teammate Zebney finishing with a time of 1:19.39, and sophomore Dalton James, who finished in 1:26.30. Finishing the long day for the Aviators was the 400 Freestyle Relay Team of Abrams, Barrett, Zebney and Conley who finished in eighth place with a time of 3:54.75.
Starting the day for the Butler women was the 200 Medley Relay Team of Elaine Dean, Grace Cope, Molly Hetzer and Riley Harrington who finished seventh in prelims, qualifying them to swim in finals, where they also finished seventh with a time of 2:07.82. Swimming the 200 freestyle were Erin Dean (2:31.42), Maddie Storost (2:35.37) and Isabel Valdespino (2:37.81). Hetzer swam the 100 IM for the women, finishing in fifteenth place with a time of 1:16.03. Kloe Sharp (1:20.40) and Raichel Sharp (1:36.79) joined Hetzer in the prelims of the 100 IM. Sydney Baker took sixth place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.69. Freshman Jillian McDowell and Lauren Masonbrink also swam the 50 freestyle in prelims, with McDowell touching the wall in 32.16 and Masonbrink in 32.39.
Swimming the 100 butterfly in prelims were Cope (1:15.28) and Harrington (1:19.77). Two Lady Aviators swam in the finals of the 100 freestyle – Elaine Dean finished in second place with a time of 58.60, with teammate freshman Rachel Shively in thirteenth place with a time of 1:03.69. McDowell joined her Lady Aviator teammates in prelims finishing with a 1:13.66. Swimming in prelims in the long 500 freestyle was I. Valdespino (7:03.52). In an exciting race in finals the 200 Freestyle Relay Team of Abbey Burton, Hetzer, Baker, and Cope finished in third place with a time of 1:51.54. Junior Elaine Dean took second place honors in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:04.71. Also swimming the 100 backstroke in prelims were Aviators Burton (1:15.32) and Ana Valdespino (1:21.91). Baker swam to an impressive fourth place finish in the 100 breastroke with a time of 1:19.57. Dominique Rohde (1:25.48) and K. Sharp (1:32.57) joined teammate Baker in prelims of the 100 breaststroke.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Harrington, Burton, Cope and Elaine Dean finished in fifth place with a time of 4:13.11, and the team of Rohde, Storost, Erin Dean and I. Valdespino finished with a time of 4:47.76.
Both teams will return to action on Saturday as they host the Butler Invitational at Wright State University Saturday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m.
